Nevada Republican Sen. Dean Heller has been in the Senate for less than one month, after being appointed to replace disgraced former Sen. John Ensign, and he is quickly establishing an independent voting record.
On Thursday Heller was one of four Republican senators to vote against extending the sunsetting provisions of the Patriot Act that have been fiercely opposed by civil libertarians.

As we gear up for the Nevada CD2 “special election”, there is an irony that just can’t be ignored.
The Republican Party will need the cooperation of all, especially the Tea Party, to win and hold CD2 in
a “free for all” election. Now that the Tea Party movement has grown strong enough to have a bigger voice,
the Republican Party would be wise to include these folks this time around.
We are all extremely aware of why Harry Reid remains in the U.S. Senate! When the conservative movement here in Nevada overwhelmingly chose Sharron Angle in the Republican primary; the Republican Party “establishment” set out to stop her from winning. As you know, there were several good candidates, all of whom would have been better then Harry Reid.
But, the fact is, Sharron Angle won the Republican primary! What happened next was and still is, unforgivable!
Instead of the Republican Party getting behind the Republican Sharron Angle, who was the Tea Party pick, Bill Raggio, A Republican (?) set out to make sure Nevada sent Reid back to Washington.
Of course, after the election, the Legislature put on a show for the public and promptly ousted the traitor. But as the Tea Party was still wiping the spit off their faces from Raggio and his group, the Nevada Legislature invited Raggio back to honor his service to Nevada, further insulting Nevada conservatives.
There continues to be a split in the Nevada Republican Party and in reality, all across the country. A split, which, if it continues, will ensure Nevada, turns “Blue” in 2012. And while the conservatives, Tea Partiers, Constitutionalists, or whatever name you give them, acknowledges that the Republican Party now needs them to get behind “THE ONE “ to prevail in CD2, pay back, just might be in order. After all, the U.S. congress enjoys an overwhelmingly Republican majority. As such, if a Democrat were to finish Heller’s term; so what? In 2012, a Republican will challenge, provided the “Bill Raggio’s” learned from their mistakes, a Republican will again take the seat. Is this a gamble the Tea Party movement is willing to bet on? Not sure! But the talk seems to be… they just might!
The Republican Party’s recent lawsuit against Secretary of State Ross Miller proves the Republican Party understands the dilemma and is working hard to control the situation. The suit is yet another attempt to let a small group dictate who will represent Nevada. Understandable move, because if they are able to put forth one candidate on the ballot, a Republican wins! However, several candidates would no doubt split the Republican vote giving the Democrat candidate an advantage.
And now the Republican Party is pleading for all, yes even the “Tea Party kooks”, to get behind the one candidate the elites will have horse-traded and handpicked. Of course the problem is that this kind of politics is exactly what gives the Tea Party their passion. To rid the system of the “Good Ole Boy” group is extremely appealing to the Tea Party activists. The fact that Republican, dinosaur elites openly worked against the Tea Party and the candidate they brought to the general election in 2010, in favor of Harry Reid, may now bite them in the butt! They owe it all to Bill Raggio (R?) and the group of 400 Republicans who campaigned against Sharron Angle. As the saying goes “...what goes around, comes around”! This irony has to make at least some “Tea Partiers” chuckle, as the shoe is now on the other foot!
So, as we ponder the Nevada “CD2 special election” and how it can be manipulated by all sides, let us keep our eye on the prize. If Tea Partiers can get past the 2010 sabotage by the very Republican Party that now needs their cooperation, a Republican will be victorious in the special election.
A strong party is only achieved with mutual respect for the party members and can never be achieved by a select few! Yes, we need a strong party, but how that Party is built, will determine its strength.
